270 Days to Go: Why “I’m In”

Mark your calendars. In 270 days you will head to the polls.

A lot of work will be done between now and Election Day. We’ll be working hard to convince Americans of the importance of protecting our progress by re-electing President Obama. We need to remind voters of health care reform protecting young Americans by allowing them to stay on their parents’ insurance until they are 26 years old. We need to remind them of student aid reform that increased Pell Grants to its highest levels, opening the door to higher education to more Americans than ever. We need to remind voters about the war in Iraq and how the President made good on his promise this past year and brought our troops home.

I’ll be working every day to remind voters about these accomplishments and what the President wants to do over the next four years—like making college even more affordable so no American is denied the opportunity for a higher education because of cost.

But I can’t do it alone. Will you join me? Start by signing up on barackobama.com.

It will be a tough year, but together we can do it. It starts with you.

Will you join me?

Meet Jen Bissett, Youth Outreach Director

When I was 12, I had a history teacher that would profoundly change my life. Mr. Grissom demanded that his students engage in the world around them, learn about their government, and form opinions on policy. I’d never encountered a teacher so fervently committed to forcing us to form political opinions. His passion for our political growth continues to shape my life today.

I was a shy girl when I first entered seventh-grade social studies class, but I was an outspoken debater by the time I left. At the end of the year, he told me I should consider working in advocacy, I was so passionate about my beliefs. That statement changed my opinion on what my life could be. In many ways, I work with Democratic youth, advocating on their behalf every day, simply because Mr. Grissom would expect nothing less of me.

Every day I come to the DNC to advocate on behalf of young people. Teens, students, and young adults are a core demographic of the Democratic Party but even more so a core demographic of change makers in our country. We saw the huge power young Americans can wield in the 2008 election. Now that we are heading toward the 2012 election, I’m sure young Americans will be the driving force to re-electing President Obama. I’m honored to have a front row seat to the awesome effect youth have on our party and political system.

Look for more blog posts from me—I'll be updating this page with the news that matters to youth.

New White House Site for Youth

The White House has launched a new site for young Americans. After listening to suggestions from youth across the country, the site will feature blog posts, videos, and remarks from the President and his administration that directly relate to young people. Some of the most recent pooled content includes statements on Pell and Educational Access, LGBT issues, DADT, Sudan/Darfur, youth employment, and international youth issues. Check out the site here.

Recently, the White House hosted a meeting with youth leaders. At the meeting, President Obama urged the young people to get involved and hold politicians to task, lest they suffer the consequences of a disengaged community.

One way to speak up is voting—so we encourage youth from around the country to join the Democrats and Organizing for America this Saturday, July 16, to register voters. Sign up here today.
