270 days until November 6: Why I’m in

The Post-9/11 G.I. Reform Bill, the Ending Veteran Homelessness and Joining Forces initiatives, Veterans Job Corps, Hire a Hero Act, ending the war in Iraq, repealing "Don’t Ask Don’t Tell," a responsible drawdown in Afghanistan, and eliminating Osama bin Laden: These and many more examples have shown we have a commander-in-chief who understands our service members, their families, and veterans. The least I could do is to "have his back” and support his efforts in any way possible for re-election.

Are you in? We have 270 days left until Election Day on November 6. Phone bank, register voters, canvass, write letters, volunteer, and bring a friend. The President needs our help, and I am in.

Retired General Slams Romney Plan to Voucherize Veterans Care

Lieutenant General Claudia Kennedy (US Army, Retired), the first woman to achieve the rank of three-star general in the U.S. Army and co-chair of the DNC’s Veterans and Military Families Council, released the following statement in reaction to Mitt Romney’s plan to privatize veterans’ health care benefits:

“Mitt Romney’s proposal to privatize our veterans’ health care is the same, sorry song and dance that we’ve heard from him before. Just as he would privatize Medicare, his announcement that he would privatize veterans’ health care, changing it into a voucher program, pulls the rug out from our veterans. He would cut ties with our veterans and leave them to fend for themselves on the private insurance market. But, our service members deserve better.

“President Obama has made a priority of providing for our veterans because he believes the sacrifices that our service members have made for this country are great and that our obligation to them should measure up to that sacrifice. He understands that our commitment to the men and women who serve their country doesn’t end when their service is up. President Obama has made investments to better treat those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury, and he’s proposed a plan to deal with high unemployment among post-911 veterans, offering tax credits for unemployed veterans and for employers who hire disabled veterans.

"But, on Veterans Day of all days, Mitt Romney made clear he would neglect that commitment to our nations veterans - proving yet again that he is out of touch with ordinary Americans and that he doesn't have what it takes to be commander-in-chief."

Meet Ron Pierce: DNC veterans outreach

As a West Point graduate, a combat veteran, and a proud Democrat, I have joined the DNC because veterans and military families are an important group that need to be integrated and considered at every aspect of the Democratic Party policies and values.

I have been active in Democratic politics my entire life and have now joined and exceptional team of motivated party members to promote the accomplishments on veterans’ issues this President has achieved. I'm working every day to get him re-elected to another term, because he understands the solemn responsibility he and our nation has to our returning veterans.

Military Family Month and Veterans Day

This month, as we gather with family and friends, it's important that we remember our extended military families as well. This month is extra special because it has been designated Military Family Month by the President. So as we celebrate Veterans Day, we can all pitch in to help our fellow veterans. Find out how you can get involved through community service to honor and salute our veterans at the Joining Forces website.

And don't forget to read the President’s Military Family Month and Veterans Day proclamations.

Medal of Honor Awarded to American Hero

Yesterday, President Obama awarded Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry with the Medal of Honor. This is a rare occurrence, as Sergeant Petry is only the second living person to receive the Medal of Honor for service in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Sergeant Petry’s story is one of bravery and courage. During a dangerous mission in Afghanistan in 2008, Petry was injured by enemy fire alongside two of his comrades. An injured Petry dragged one of these comrades to safety. An enemy grenade landed nearby, and Sergeant Petry grabbed the small bomb to throw it back and save the lives of his fellow Rangers. Before he was able to release the grenade, it exploded, causing him to lose his hand. Tying a tourniquet around his own arm, Sergeant Petry continued leading the operation until the end. His heroic actions undoubtedly saved the lives of his comrades.

Sergeant Petry, who was in training to become a Ranger at the time of the attacks on September 11, 2001, has since served seven deployments. Like our other brave service members, Sergeant Petry chose to defend our country in any way he could. He has followed through with that commitment and has exemplified what being a great soldier means.

President Obama noted in his speech that although Sergeant Petry has earned the admiration of us all, he is also a reminder of the continuous heroism that is exercised each and every day in our ongoing wars:

In his selfless service, Sergeant Petry is an example for all Americans. And he is just one of thousands of young people who lined up to defend this country after we were attacked, and who continue to do so. Through 10 long years of war, our men and women in uniform have served selflessly, sacrificing more than many of us can imagine—sometimes sacrificing all.

This American hero led an action that was selfless and courageous. These types of heroes are all around us, and we as Americans owe them the best that our society can offer. Take action by volunteering to help veterans and their families or by sending a note to thank our troops here.
