Yesterday, President Obama awarded Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry with the Medal of Honor. This is a rare occurrence, as Sergeant Petry is only the second living person to receive the Medal of Honor for service in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Sergeant Petry’s story is one of bravery and courage. During a dangerous mission in Afghanistan in 2008, Petry was injured by enemy fire alongside two of his comrades. An injured Petry dragged one of these comrades to safety. An enemy grenade landed nearby, and Sergeant Petry grabbed the small bomb to throw it back and save the lives of his fellow Rangers. Before he was able to release the grenade, it exploded, causing him to lose his hand. Tying a tourniquet around his own arm, Sergeant Petry continued leading the operation until the end. His heroic actions undoubtedly saved the lives of his comrades.
Sergeant Petry, who was in training to become a Ranger at the time of the attacks on September 11, 2001, has since served seven deployments. Like our other brave service members, Sergeant Petry chose to defend our country in any way he could. He has followed through with that commitment and has exemplified what being a great soldier means.
President Obama noted in his speech that although Sergeant Petry has earned the admiration of us all, he is also a reminder of the continuous heroism that is exercised each and every day in our ongoing wars:
In his selfless service, Sergeant Petry is an example for all Americans. And he is just one of thousands of young people who lined up to defend this country after we were attacked, and who continue to do so. Through 10 long years of war, our men and women in uniform have served selflessly, sacrificing more than many of us can imagine—sometimes sacrificing all.
This American hero led an action that was selfless and courageous. These types of heroes are all around us, and we as Americans owe them the best that our society can offer. Take action by volunteering to help veterans and their families or by sending a note to thank our troops here.
