Happy 4th of July from YDA

Today our nation celebrates 235 years of independence. No matter how far removed we are from those historic battles, the American experience continues to inspire generations of young people.  It is a tremendous example of how a few brave men and women can shape not only the history of a nation but also the world.

More than two centuries later, the Millennial Generation carries on the proud tradition of speaking truth to power.  Over the past year, Young Democrats have been on the forefront of fighting for college affordability, health care for millions who are uninsured, equal rights for our men and women in uniform regardless of sexual orientation, and most recently access to voting rights for all Americans.

We continue to struggle for a more perfect union by making the reality of our nation consistent with the spirit of our Constitution and Declaration of Independence.  Today and everyday let us remember that we are the inheritors of a monumental legacy and that our participation in the political and governing process is our right as much as it is our responsibility.

Perhaps most importantly, let us also remember that freedom comes at a very high cost.  From the battlefields of Lexington and Concord to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, so many of our fellow Americans have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for the past 235 years.

From all of us at the Young Democrats of America, we wish you a happy and safe 4th of July.

Sincerely,
