YDA President Rod Snyder released the following statement on the one year anniversary of the mining disaster at Upper Big Branch:
“One year ago today, the nation experienced its worst mining disaster in four decades. That afternoon, the lives of 29 men were cut short by an explosion at Upper Big Branch mine in Raleigh County, West Virginia.
“While we still do not fully understand the cause of this tragic event, we must recommit ourselves to the task of ensuring that all of our miners have the very safest working environment and that companies are held accountable when lives are unnecessarily endangered.
“It is rarely acknowledged, but we depend on these workers each and every day to provide the energy that underpins our economy. While mining is an inherently dangerous profession, we have a responsibility as a society to minimize associated risks by adopting safety and health regulations that are sufficiently protective.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives and to the community that has been forever changed. You are not forgotten and you are not alone in the search for justice and for answers.”
