On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court handed down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, guaranteeing a woman’s right to keep decisions about her body between her and her doctor. Yet 39 years later, women’s reproductive freedoms are under attack in 24 states across the country. Rather than working hard to create jobs and focus on our economic recovery, Republicans have decided that their priority is to wage a war on women’s access to critical health services.
Last November, Mississippi voters prevented a dangerous step backward for women’s rights by rejecting the so-called “personhood” amendment, an extreme ballot measure that would have outlawed abortion in all cases, banned certain forms of birth control for millions of women, and restricted access to infertility treatments. Thankfully, the people of Mississippi saw through this ideologically motivated attack and voted to uphold the rights of women and families, soundly defeating this out-of-touch initiative.
But as women—and those who care about their health—our fight is far from over. Republicans are working day and night to get similar measures on the ballot in states across the country, including in my home state of Florida. We must redouble our efforts to stop them from rolling back the critical protections that women have fought so hard to achieve.
Unfortunately, we can’t simply dismiss these dangerous initiatives as the radical efforts of some small fringe movement. The fact is that all of the mainstream Republican candidates have endorsed the “personhood” initiative—including Mitt Romney, who said he would have “absolutely” supported such an amendment as the governor of Massachusetts. We cannot afford their failed agenda. We must show them that it is time to stop playing politics with women's lives.
I was six years old when Roe v. Wade was decided. I was fortunate to be able to grow up in a time when birth control was accessible, and our rights seemed safe. I never could have imagined that only a generation later, these rights would be imperiled as part of a calculated political movement.
Nearly four decades after Roe, Republicans have truly reached an all-time low. They are diverting time and precious resources away from putting Americans back to work and getting our economy back on track in an effort to launch a full fledged assault on women's health. We cannot let that happen. Please join me in standing up for the rights of women and families across the country by telling Republicans that we are fed up with their right-wing attacks on women’s health.
President Obama has been a staunch advocate for women since the day he took office, whether fighting back attempts to defund family planning, or blocking legislation that would limit insurance coverage for reproductive health. He’s protected and advanced policies that promote fairness, equal opportunity, and a level playing field for women in this country. But he cannot do it alone. On the anniversary of this landmark case, we must preserve it for generations to come by doing our part to re-elect the President. Your help is crucial, even if it’s volunteering for just an hour a week at your local field office or making a $5 donation. We've already seen a preview of what Republicans aim to do to our rights and our health. We cannot afford to sit this one out—there is simply too much at stake.
