DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Statement Congratulating Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx for Decis

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement after Mayor Anthony Foxx’s decisive re-election victory as mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina:

“I’m thrilled to congratulate Mayor Anthony Foxx and all of his supporters for this victory tonight. From economic development and jobs to education and fighting crime, Anthony is a proven leader for the people of Charlotte. Mayor Foxx’s remarkable leadership and steadfast stewardship of the ‘Queen City’ is leading Charlotte boldly into the 21st century. Mayor Foxx’s commitment to public service and dedication to the City is an inspiration, and I look forward to seeing what else the Mayor will accomplish on behalf of his constituents in the years to come. Next year, as the world’s eyes are focused on Charlotte as they host the Democratic National Convention and our party formally nominates President Obama as our candidate for President, I am so pleased that it will be Mayor Anthony Foxx welcoming all of us to Charlotte, the beacon of the New South.

“This race was also important for what it said about how the campaigns were conducted. Democrats demonstrated once again that we have committed volunteers and a turnout effort that far exceeds anything on the other side. In addition, Republicans learned the hard way that rooting against the success of the convention for Charlotte—an event which will bring jobs and put Charlotte on the world stage—is a recipe for disaster with voters.”

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on Governor Steve Beshear’s Victory in Kentucky

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement tonight after Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear won his race for re-election:

“Congratulations to Governor Steve Beshear for what was a very well-deserved victory in Kentucky tonight. The people of Kentucky voted to reelect Gov. Beshear because they know that like President Obama, he is a proven leader for working families. While his Republican opponent would have used the Governor’s Mansion to push through misguided, Tea Party approved policies at the expense of Kentucky’s middle class, Gov. Beshear will continue to do what he’s done best since being elected four years ago: working across the aisle to create jobs, attract new businesses to the state, and ensure that Kentucky’s children have access to the best possible education.

“So tonight’s win is not just a victory for Gov. Beshear—it’s a victory for middle-class families across the state, who know that Gov. Beshear is fighting to restore their economic security and keep Kentucky moving forward. I congratulate the people of Kentucky on the results of tonight’s election, and I know Gov. Beshear will continue to work tirelessly on their behalf."

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on Governor Earl Ray Tomblin

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement after Democrat Earl Ray Tomblin won the special election tonight in West Virginia for the governorship.

"Congratulations to Governor Earl Ray Tomblin for his much-deserved victory tonight in West Virginia. This is not just a victory for Governor Tomblin but also for West Virginia's working families. The people of West Virginia saw through the millions of dollars in outside money sent from the wealthy and corporate special interests to influence this election. Instead, they voted for Governor Tomblin—someone who, like President Obama, has his eye on the ball—working to create jobs, educate children and win the future. He knows what it takes to keep West Virginia and America moving forward, and he is focused like a laser on keeping the American Dream alive.

"This is an exciting victory and good news for middle-class families in West Virginia, who have seen in Governor Tomblin a leader who will continue to fight on their behalf. Congratulations again to Governor Tomblin and the people of West Virginia."

Congratulations to Janice Hahn

Yesterday, California’s 36th Congressional District held a special election and voters elected Democrat Janice Hahn to serve as their next representative in Congress. Voters rejected the negative tactics by the other side, and instead elected a committed public servant who will bring to Washington her focus on creating jobs and growing the economy.

After getting word of the election results, Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement:

I congratulate Janice Hahn and her supporters for their hard-earned victory in California’s 36th Congressional District and look forward to working with her in the House of Representatives. Voters supported Janice in this election because she is going to fight for California’s working families and protect critical initiatives like Medicare. They also emphatically rejected her opponent’s support for the Republican Party’s plan to end Medicare as we know it to preserve tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and big oil.

Janice’s win isn’t just a victory for Democrats; it is a victory for everyone who believes that campaigns should be won or lost on the issues, not as a result of which candidate makes the most outrageous videos or audacious claims.

I was proud to campaign for Janice with our dedicated OFA California volunteers, Summer Organizers and the California Democratic Party. With this election behind us, we look forward to continuing to work with President Obama and Congressional Democrats who are committed to getting our fiscal house in order in a responsible way so we can win the future for all Americans.

Again, congrats to Janice Hahn, the campaign, and all of its supporters on a hard-fought victory.
