On Friday, President Obama visited the Washington Navy Yard to announce several new initiatives designed to ensure America’s veterans have an easier transition to private-sector employment. The President challenged private businesses to “hire or train 100,000 unemployed veterans or their spouses by the end of 2013.”
At this event, the President was joined by military and veterans leaders, as well as representatives from the largest private employers across the country who have committed to answering the President’s call.
Addressing the many challenges veterans face as civilians, the President proposed measures that include:
- Creating a “reverse boot camp” that assists veterans transition their skill sets for a civilian workforce, which includes greater access to career advice;
- Maintaining the current Work Opportunity Tax Credit for veterans with service-connected disabilities (currently the maximum is $4,800);
- Enacting a Returning Heroes Tax Credit for businesses that hire unemployed veterans.
